Winter 2008
A container ship suffered severe main engine damage en-route from Hong Kong to Long Beach, California. General Average was declared, and the vessel was eventually brought into Long Beach. Some cargo was discharged and all interests waited for the engines to be repaired. Once completed, the containers were reloaded and the vessel completed her voyage through the Panama Canal and on to Boston, Massachusetts. All General Average conditions aside, the four Shorepoint interests aboard were all imports of seafood and while main engine damage was unlikely to have caused disruption of power to the reefers, we felt extra precautions were warranted. Shorepoint persuaded the various underwriters to survey and test the seafood consignments - at no cost to our clients. Fortunately, all shipments turned out to be in good order.
Summer 2008
A large cold storage facility in Texas suffered a catastrophic release of ammonia coolant into a freezer building. Three of Shorepoint's seafood importers utilized the facility and several million dollars worth of catfish and shrimp were contaminated. The massive scale of the loss and interference by the authorities made removal and inspection difficult. Shorepoint, working closely with the underwriters, surveyors and salvors, effected a considerable reduction in the loss by virtue of exhaustive testing, repackaging/relabeling and salvage sale of damaged products. The combined losses ultimately settled for around $925,000.
